Laptop keyboard issues are one of the most common problems we deal with at Manchester PC. Customers often contact us with problems ranging from keys not functioning, keys falling off, and even liquid damage. In some cases, the entire keyboard just stops working.

A lot of people initially assume it’s a software issue—maybe a driver needs updating. While that can sometimes be the case, in most instances, keyboard failures are hardware-related.

Common Causes of Keyboard Failures

1. Liquid Damage

Spilled a drink on your laptop? Even if the keyboard seems fine at first, problems can arise days, weeks, or even months later. The most common symptoms include:

  • Sticky or unresponsive keys (especially with sugary drinks)
  • Keys that randomly stop working
  • Erratic behaviour, like multiple keys being pressed at once

What happens is that liquid seeps into the tiny electrical contacts inside the keyboard. Even if you dry it out, corrosion can set in and cause failures over time.

2. Wear and Tear – Keys Popping Off

Laptop keyboards aren’t built like traditional mechanical keyboards. The keys are delicate, and once a key comes loose, it’s often due to a broken scissor switch or hinge underneath. Replacing a single key can be tricky because:

  • The parts are often specific to your exact laptop model
  • The hinge mechanism might be damaged and not repairable
  • Finding replacement keys can be difficult, as manufacturers don’t sell them separately

3. Faulty Flex Cable or Connector Issues

Your keyboard is connected to your laptop’s motherboard using a thin, delicate flex cable. Over time, this can develop faults, especially if:

  • The laptop has been dropped or impacted
  • The cable has been compressed under the motherboard
  • There’s internal corrosion from moisture exposure

Why Modern Laptop Keyboards Are Harder to Repair

Laptops used to have removable keyboards—just unscrew a few screws, pop in a new one, and you were good to go. Unfortunately, that’s no longer the case with most modern laptops.

Now, many keyboards are spot-welded to the laptop chassis using tiny plastic pins. This means:

  • The keyboard isn’t meant to be removed separately
  • To replace the keyboard, the entire upper chassis often needs replacing
  • It’s more expensive and time-consuming compared to older models

Some manufacturers have started making repairs easier again—Lenovo, for example, provides access to original replacement parts. But many still don’t, meaning we sometimes have to source refurbished parts or entire chassis replacements.

How We Handle Laptop Keyboard Repairs

If your keyboard has failed, we offer several options depending on availability and your budget:

  1. Genuine OEM Replacement Parts (when available) – Best for longevity, but can be expensive
  2. Refurbished Upper Chassis Replacements – More affordable but may have minor wear and tear
  3. Third-Party Replacement Parts – A cost-effective solution when OEM parts aren’t available

For MacBooks, things get even trickier. Apple keyboards are often glued to the chassis, and in many cases, the battery is also glued to the same assembly. If your MacBook needs a keyboard replacement, you may also need a new battery unless we can source a chassis that already includes one.

Should You Repair Your Laptop Keyboard?

Absolutely—if your laptop is still in good working order, repairing the keyboard is much more cost-effective than replacing the entire device. Throwing away a laptop just because the keyboard stopped working doesn’t make sense, especially when there’s a viable repair option.

However, it’s important to set the right expectations:

  • Keyboard replacements on modern laptops take time
  • Some manufacturers make sourcing parts difficult
  • The repair process can be more involved than you’d expect, often requiring a complete teardown and reassembly
