Is it worth repairing my laptop?
We all have a responsibility to protect the earth and can all do our bit to help. But we also understand that this type of ‘thinking’ cannot be applied to all situations.
At Manchester-PC, it is our mission to keep as many laptops functioning for as long as possible to do our bit towards protecting our environment and reduce the amount of waste going to landfill.
While we don’t have a one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to deciding if your laptop should be fixed or thrown away, we will do our very best to help you decide if your laptop is worth saving.
The most important thing you need to ask yourself is; does my laptop do what I need it to do? If the answer is yes, then it’s most likely worth the effort of repairing. In most cases, the repair of the laptop will be significantly cheaper than replacing the laptop with a brand new one.
You might be thinking of replacing your broken laptop with a second hand one. However, this can often be a mistake as your replacement laptop may end up with a fault soon after purchase.
Before you decide whether you should replace or repair your laptop, it is important to get an idea of what it will cost to get your laptop repaired and back up and running before you make this decision. We are happy to provide you with our advice, but the final decision will be yours.

How long will it take to repair my laptop?
At Manchester-PC, we strive to repair your computer or laptop as quickly as possible. In most cases, we can perform same-day repairs. However, this will depend on our current workload, as well as the level of work needed to repair your laptop.
Let us give you a few examples:
- You have just cracked your non-touch laptop screen. In most cases, we can carry out the laptop screen repairs the same day. We try to keep a running stock of the most popular laptop screens, and in most cases, we can repair your laptop in our fully equipped van right on your own doorstep.
- Your laptop won’t power on. In this instance, it’s very hard for us to say what the problem is without carrying out our own diagnostics. In most cases, the problem will be linked to your hardware. If that is the case, then we inform you of the problem and provide a quote for the replacement part.
- Your laptop comes on, but the operating system won’t load. In most cases, we can repair this problem within 24 working hours.
Whatever your laptop problem we will always strive to provide you with the quickest and most effective repair possible, but we will not sacrifice the quality of our work for speed. That is our promise to you.
How long does it take to repair a water/liquid damaged laptop?
This will depend on many different factors.
For example, how the laptop was handled after the liquid damage occurred and where the liquid entered the laptop. In most cases, the liquid is spilt over the keyboard. Luckily, most laptop keyboards do provide some waterproofing which would minimise the liquid travelling towards the motherboard and other key components.
If this is the case the repair would normally take around 1 to 3 working days. However, if the liquid has damaged the motherboard then you are looking from 1 to 14 working days.
We will always endeavour to carry out all water/liquid laptop repairs as quickly as possible but without compromising on the quality of the repair.
How long does it take to repair a laptop motherboard related issue?
Laptop motherboards are extremely complex and, in some cases, the best and the most cost-effective solution is to replace it.
The estimated length of repair will depend on the model of the laptop and the availability of the replacement parts, as some motherboards are easier to get hold of than others. As a rough guide, a laptop motherboard repair or replacement will normally take between 3 to 14 working days to complete.
How long does it take to replace the battery on my laptop?
Most laptop battery replacements can be done the same day. If we don’t have the correct battery in stock for your laptop then we will order one and arrange for the battery replacement to take place on the day the battery is delivered to us. Therefore, most laptop battery replacement will be carried out on the same day, unless we need to order one in for you.
Can you provide me with a laptop repair quote for insurance purposes?
Yes, that is not a problem and it’s something we do often. We would still need to collect your laptop and carry our own diagnostics to provide an accurate repair quote. We are unable to provide quotes over the phone or provide ‘false’ information on our engineer’s reports.
You will be provided with an engineer’s report on our letterhead as well as the invoice for the diagnostics. We will also be happy to liaise with your insurance company if required.
How long will laptop software-related repair take?
Most of the laptop software related problem we see are in fact related to the operating system. If you want us to try and repair the operating system, then this can take anywhere from a few hours to 3 working days.
If it’s not possible to repair the system files, then we will look to reinstall the operating system using an official image and use the original product key.
I don’t know what is wrong with my laptop, can you help?
Most of our clients don’t know what is wrong with their laptop, so you are not alone!
Our engineers are qualified to degree level and have extensive knowledge and experience of repairing most laptop problems. It’s not always possible for us to tell you what the problem is over the phone or email without carrying out our own physical diagnostic. Therefore, we have designed a service package that covers this scenario.
When do you expect payment for the laptop repair?
The payment is always made after the job has been completed unless we are ordering parts on your behalf, in which case we would ask you to make a 50% deposit contribution to cover the costs of the parts needed for your repair.
Once the job has been completed, we will issue you with our invoice via email. The invoice will contain all the details about your repair and warranty if one is provided. At the bottom of the invoice, you will find our Manchester PC business direct deposit bank details which you can use to pay your invoice.
Can I drop off my laptop for repair?
Manchester PC provides you with a secure end-to-end service where we will come out to your home or workplace to perform your laptop repairs.
Our service packages have been specifically developed for clients who are too busy to come to our repair centre. Our laptop repair services have been developed to save our clients both ‘Time and Money’.
We can arrange COVID secure contact-less collection and return at the time it’s most convenient for you.
Our repair centre office visits are strictly by ‘Appointment only’ as we are frequently in out of the office throughout the day, and our repair schedule is booked out in advance.
Why do we sometimes ask for pictures of your laptop problem?
From time to time we might ask for you to email us photos of your laptop problem. The reason we ask for photographic evidence is to ensure that we deliver you with the quickest possible laptop repair service and solution. Our experienced laptop engineers can sometimes use visuals to help them better diagnose a problem and in return provide you with a more accurate quote for the repair.
Do you need my laptop password?
This will depend on the problem you are experiencing. In most cases, we can use our own operating systems to test your laptop. However, if the problem is related to your Windows or Mac OS operating system then yes, we would ask you for your password or where possible you can set a temporary password on your operating system, which you can change again following your repair.
Once the job is completed, we will securely destroy your password.
Will you go through my private pictures and documents?
The only time we would access any documents or photos held on your laptop is if required to do so at your request.
We have an extremely strict code of conduct when it comes to the privacy of our client’s data. We only access files that are required to carry out a successful repair.
However, if we do come across anything that is seen as illegal under the UK law then we will have to report this as we are required to do so by law.
What does your ‘No Fix, No Fee Policy’ Cover?
If we can’t repair your laptop i.e. ‘we can’t find the fault’ then you will have nothing to pay. However, this is ‘very’ rare as in most cases the reason the laptop repair is not successful is down to the actual cost of the repair, i.e. a replacement motherboard is required and the cost of the replacement motherboard is greater than what the client wishes to spend to get the laptop working again.
We always try to carry out laptop repairs without the need for replacement parts where able. But this not always possible or cost-effective.
This is to prevent ‘abuse’ of our service where a client would seek to use our free diagnostics to then go on to repair it themselves. It’s for this reason we do charge a diagnostic fee if the client chooses not to go ahead with the repair due to the cost of the replacement parts.
Is there a warranty on your laptop repairs?
We offer our clients a ninety days parts and labour warranty on all the parts we supply and install. This means if the part we supplied fails within 90 days of the repair, we will collect, repair, and return the laptop free of charge. However, if the problem is found to be unrelated to the supplied parts then there will be a diagnostic fee to pay. Full details will be provided on the invoice.
We provide a seven-day warranty on the repair of parts that have not been replaced. For example, software-related problems.
Are laptop software related repairs covered under the warranty?
We provide a 7-day user test period for all software related repairs. Which means that if the ‘same’ problem occurs again within the 7 days, we will be happy to review the repair to ensure it was carried out successfully.
Software problems are not something we have control over and are normally created by the user or the developer. Therefore, it would be unethical for Manchester PC to issue longer warranties on such repairs.
What payments do you accept?
You can make the payment via bank transfer. Once your laptop repair has been completed, we will issue you with an invoice via email which will also contain our business bank details.
Due to COVID-19 we are no longer accepting cash or card payments as both of these require contact which is against our policy at this present time.
