Sell your laptop

Sell your laptop

Windows laptops and other non-Apple laptops, from everyday home models to business and gaming laptops. Working or faulty, we will take a look, provided the laptop is complete. Tell us about any repairs, upgrades or replaced parts and we will assess them individually. Send us the details and photos and we will email you if we can make an offer.

What to tell us about your laptop

You do not need to know everything. “I don’t know” is a fine answer in the form, and the photos fill in a lot of gaps.

Brand and full model name

The model is usually printed on a label underneath the laptop. In Windows, type “System Information” into the Start menu: it lists the System Model, the processor and the installed memory.

Processor

For example Intel Core i5-1135G7 or AMD Ryzen 7 5800H. The generation matters as much as the “i5” or “Ryzen 7” part, so copy the full name if you can.

Memory and storage

How much RAM and how big the drive is. Settings, then System, then Storage shows the drive size. If you do not know, choose “I don’t know” in the form.

Graphics, for gaming laptops

The graphics card model, for example NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Laptop GPU. Task Manager shows it on the Performance tab.

How the fault shows itself

What happens when you press power, whether the charging light comes on, and any error messages. A photo of an error message is often more useful than a description.

Working or faulty: what we may consider

These are examples of what we are happy to look at. We cannot promise an offer for every one, but a fault on its own does not rule a laptop out.

We may consider

  • Working laptops with normal wear, such as scuffs, marks on the lid or a worn palm rest.
  • Cracked screens, or screens with lines or no picture.
  • Laptops that will not power on, will not charge or will not start Windows.
  • Keyboards with keys that no longer work.
  • Batteries that no longer hold charge.
  • Stiff or cracked hinges, where nothing has been taken apart.
  • Liquid spills, if you tell us what was spilled and when.

Generally not suitable

  • Repairs that were not disclosed, or poor-quality repair work. Official manufacturer repairs and properly fitted memory or SSD upgrades are fine to tell us about: we assess them individually.
  • Missing parts, such as a missing battery, bottom panel, keys, memory or drive.
  • Laptops locked with a BIOS or firmware password you cannot remove.
  • Work laptops still managed by an organisation, or that you are not authorised to sell.
  • Laptops reported lost or stolen.

Photos that help

  • The lid, closed.
  • Open, with the screen switched on if it works. The System Information window is ideal.
  • The keyboard and touchpad.
  • The underside, including the model label. Cover the serial number if you like.
  • Both sides, showing the ports.
  • A close-up of any damage you mention, and the charger if you are including it.

Daylight works better than a flash, especially for screens.

What affects an offer

  • Make, model and age.
  • Processor generation, memory and storage.
  • For gaming laptops, the graphics card.
  • The condition of the screen, keyboard, hinges and case.
  • What the fault is, if there is one.
  • Whether it is complete, any repairs or upgrades, and whether it comes with a charger.

If you accept an offer

Offers are valid for seven days. If you accept and your postcode is one of the selected Manchester and nearby postcodes we collect from, we arrange collection at an agreed time, at no charge. Elsewhere in the UK, we email you written instructions for posting your laptop. When it arrives, we check it against your description and photos, agree the final price with you and pay by bank transfer. Read how the whole process works.

Before handover, back up your data, remove your accounts and any activation lock, and erase the laptop if it still works. The preparation guide has the steps.

Selling a laptop: questions

Do you buy laptops that will not turn on?
We consider them. A laptop that will not turn on can still be worth an offer if it is complete. Tell us what happens when you press the power button and whether the charging light comes on.
Do I need to include the charger?
Please include it if you have it, and tick it in the form. If it is missing, just say so.
I upgraded the memory or SSD myself. Is that a problem?
Not usually. Memory and SSD upgrades are acceptable if you tell us about them, they are properly fitted and the laptop is complete. Include the details in the form.
Is this the same as your laptop repair service?
No. This page is about selling a laptop to us. If you would rather have it fixed, our laptop repair service has its own quote form.
